While thousands of local schools and districts may show innovation and leadership in support of students and staff with asthma and allergies, strong state-wide policies are lacking throughout the U.S., according to the AAFA.

“In fact, 12 states failed to achieve even half of the core policy standards,” Charlotte Collins, JD, AAFA’s vice president of policy and programs, said in the news release.

Food fight over allergy ban | thetelegraph.com.au

Food fight over allergy ban | thetelegraph.com.au.

A leading dietitian says people are at risk of developing an intolerance later in life if they forego certain foods without having an allergy, but allergy specialists say there is no evidence to support that claim.

Dietitian Arlene Normand said banning food was unhealthy unless an allergy was present and could lead to later health complications.

But Royal Prince Alfred Hospital allergy specialist Dr Robert Loblay disputed this.

“There is no evidence to suggest that avoiding a food can predispose an individual to an intolerance,” he said.

While he supported high risk allergy families eliminating foods such as gluten, milk or nuts, he said it can be difficult to enforce a total ban.
